Multi-Physics Adjoints

Adjoint methods offer a possible solution to the curse of dimensionality problem in large-scale sensitivity analysis
Proven to be effective in design problems with 1000s of free parameters

Not yet demonstrated for complex, multiphysics problems

  • Derivation of the mathematical formulation is difficult
  • Complex interdependence in system of PDEs (e. g. turbulence models) are typically ignored
  • Non-smooth functions (e. g. limiters) are hard to evaluate
  • Only selected output functional can be treated
  • Adjoint boundary conditions are challenging
  • Direct application of AD tools typically fail or is inefficient for large codes
Alonso & Marta (2007) have developed ADjoint an adjoint-based framework for general systems of PDEs: plasma-control in hypersonic vehicles
